OUTCOMES RESEARCH

When a family member is choosing a treatment center for a loved one, the question that matters most is “what is your success rate?”  An insurer or employer choosing which treatment programs to include in their network also wants to know "will your program reduce the future cost of health care for our members"?  Vista Research Group’s RECOVERY 20/20 outcomes research cost-effectively answers both of these questions.

Outcomes Research Overview

Vista follows up with patients who spent at least 7 days in treatment three times in their first year after leaving treatment -- at one month, six months and twelve months post-treatment.  Each time, Vista makes at least 7 attempts (and usually more than 10) to contact patients by text, email and phone.  If it appears that the patient no longer has the same cell phone and/or email, researchers reach out to the family members and/or friends the patient has identified who can help us locate this person.  All patients who complete the outcomes survey receive a small Target or Starbucks gift card.

Patients are promised that their results will be kept confidential and will only be reported back to the treatment center in aggregate form.  However, if a patient reports using again, they are asked at the end of the survey if they would like someone from their treatment center to contact them to discuss possibly going back into treatment.  If they answer affirmatively, the treatment center is immediately notified.

By following this process, Vista is typically able to reach more than 50% of patients at each of these time periods for most centers, and often reaches a much higher percentage than this.

Results are summarized for each treatment program in an annual Treatment Outcomes Report containing dozens of charts and graphs.  Download Learnings From Three Years of Addiction Treatment Outcomes Research to get an overview of the types of useful data reported to each treatment center.

Use Your Outcomes Research Results

1.  To Attract More Patients

Vista's Treatment Outcomes Report answers the questions that families and people seeking treatment want to know:

  • What is your success rate?

  • How does your success rate compare to that of other similar programs?

  • What impact does your treatment have on your patients' ability to work or go to school?

2.  To Negotiate More Effectively with Payers

The Treatment Outcomes Report also addresses the most important concerns of health insurance companies and self-insured employer groups.

  • How does treatment at your center reduce future healthcare costs?

  • Does treatment affect the long-term severity of underlying mental disorders our members are struggling with?

3.  To Continually Improve the Effectiveness of Your Treatment

In addition to using your outcomes results to attract more patients and negotiate more effectively with payers, the insightful analyses in your Treatment Outcomes report are useful in many other ways.

  • Convince patients to remain in treatment by sharing data from your own patient population:

  • Show how the actions your patients take after treatment affect their ability to meet their treatment goals:

  • Determine the type of patients that your center is most effective treating by primary drug of choice, demographics, mental disorder, etc.:

Pricing

The base cost for RECOVERY 20/20 is $100 per patient.  Centers are charged one-third of this amount at one month, one-third at six months and one-third at twelve months after the patient leaves treatment.  At each of these times, Vista's researchers will make at least 7 attempts to contact the patient.

Because achieving a high response rate is critical to maximizing the center's success rates, Vista incentivizes their researchers to go the extra mile in contacting slow-to-respond patients.  If Vista is able to complete at least 60% of the interviews due during any particular month, Vista receives a 10% bonus from the treatment center for that month's calls, with the bonus increasing to 15% for completing 65% of the interviews and 20% for completing 70% of the interviews.

For larger treatment centers, Vista will randomly select 250 patients from each group the center wants to be able to report separate results for, thus capping the pre-bonus outcomes research cost at $25,000 per group.  For example, if a treatment center wants to report the results of their residential program separately from that of their IOP, Vista will randomly select no more than 250 patients from each of these programs to follow up with after treatment.
